Fares & Passes

Mountain Line offers a wide array of services to its customers, and we make paying for transportation fast, affordable, and easy by accepting cash and other forms of payments, as well as providing reduced fare options for eligible individuals and groups.

A single-trip fare is a one-way trip paid with cash or a valid pass. Drivers carry no cash, so you’ll want to have exact fare or valid pass to ride.

Mountain Line accepts multiple forms of payment including cash, mobile fares via the Transit app, and the FlagPass Cash Card. Single rides and Day Passes may be purchased with exact cash on the bus or in the Transit app.

If your one-way trip requires more than one bus or route to complete, we recommend purchase of a Day Pass. Mountain Line does not offer free transfers.

Passes

Mobile Ticketing

Transit app logo

To make a purchase using your mobile device, simply download the Transit app and navigate to the “Buy Ticket” button. Select your fare type and desired pass. When you are ready to ride, press “Activate my Pass” or tap your pass on the farebox to activate your fare and you are on your way.

FlagPass Cash Card (Stored Value)

Not ready to commit to a 30-day pass, but don’t want the hassle of buying day passes? A FlagPass Cash stored value card is the answer! Load between $5 – $50 on the card and use it like cash to pay for your bus fare – the fare for your ride is subtracted from the card, so you pay as you go.

How it works:

  • Load funds on your FlagPass Cash card, board the bus, and tap the card on the farebox to deduct the fare from your available balance. You can load more funds when your balance gets low.
  • Initial purchase of the card can be online (we’ll mail it to you), or you can pick it up in our office. You can load more funds on the Mountain Line website or at the Mountain Line office.
  • When you use either the Transit app or the FlagPass Cash card, you receive the added benefit of fare capping.

Fare Capping

Fare capping ensures riders never pay more per day or per month than the amount of a day pass in a single day or a 30-day pass over a month. Once your pass purchases and activations in a day or month add up to the value of a day pass or 30-day pass, you will automatically be provided the higher value pass to use for the remaining period of time.

How it works:

  • Purchase one-way rides or day passes via mobile ticketing (Transit app) or stored value (FlagPass Cash).
  • Once you have paid $2.50 in a single day (or $1.25 for reduced fare), the system will “cap” your fare and let you ride fare-free for the rest of the day.
  • In a calendar month, once you have used $34 in fare (or $17 for reduced fare) – which is the cost of a 30-day pass – the system will cap your fare and let you ride fare-free for the rest of the month.

Field Trip Passes

Mountain Line offers a Field Trip Pass Program for educators to take students on field trips via public transit at a discounted rate. Student passes are $0.60 and chaperone passes are $1.25. Organizers should email passes@mountainline.az.gov or call 928-779-6624 at least 24 hours prior to the field trip to order passes.

ecoPASS

Mountain Line’s ecoPASS program enables Flagstaff employers and residential developments to provide all their employees or residents with an annual bus pass at a reduced rate. The goal is to encourage these employees and residents to help reduce traffic and parking congestion while offering an affordable transportation option to use in their daily commute and personal lives. The per-pass cost of the ecoPASS program is based on the total number of employees or residents. It is a sliding scale in which the more employees or residents an employer or development has, the lower the per-pass cost. Email passes@mountainline.az.gov to obtain specific pricing information for your workplace or development.
